A giant pumped storage power plant will be built in the USA

Recently, the US Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) signed preliminary approval for a 2,650 MW power plant in Halverson Canyon, Washington, in the western US.

The developer of the project is Daybreak Power Inc, which specializes in the construction of pumped storage power plants. The cost of the project is estimated at nearly $ 5 billion. Roosevelt Lake and a new reservoir, created on a hill above the lake, will be used to build a power plant.

The company said in a statement that the project does not involve "blocking rivers, flooding sacred sites, or depleting water resources."

It will use the “cheap surplus” of renewable energy to charge the battery.

The PSPP will be able to generate clean electricity “10 hours or more” per day.

The facility will be connected to the US Northwest backbone, which Daybreak said will provide 24/7 wind and solar power to consumers in Montana and the entire Northwest.

It is noted that in 2020, 1.5 GW of pumped storage power plants were connected to the grids in the world, 1.2 GW of which are located in China.

In early 2021, Australia announced that it would build its first pumped storage unit with a capacity of 250 MW for the first time in 40 years. It will be located next to the existing 50 MW Kidston solar power plant, which will be expanded to 270 MW.
